The Month of Ramadan

I am much more aware of Ramadan in Belgium than I am in the US, but barely.  This is surprising, since the Muslim population is about 17-20% in Brussels.  The diverse group observe the month of fasting — amazingly, without any change in their routine.  My co-worker Tariq discreetly stands outside during lunch time at work, our Arab market continues without missing a step, and in general there is a very non-showy, humble aspect to it on a large scale, which is amazing to witness.

In my own family, my sister-in-law observes Ramadan in Luxembourg.  When I realized we will be in Luxembourg next week, she offered to prepare an amazing Moroccan feast for ‘iftar’ (breaking the fast).  Again, I am at awe of selflessness, generosity, and humilty of those who are fasting.

And since she recently sent me a beautiful sentiment from Sufi poet Jalal al-Din Rumi, I am posting this poem for her.  Ramadan Kareem, dear Zahra!  (I learned that from my co-worker Hamid).

O moon-faced Beloved,
the month of Ramadan has arrived.
Cover the table
And open the path of praise…
…The lips of the Master are parched
from calling the Beloved.
The sound of your call resounds
through the horn of your empty belly.
Let nothing be inside of you.
Be empty: give your lips to the lips of the reed.
When like a reed you fill with His breath,
then you’ll taste sweetness.
